Dancing In My Kitchen: A Sublimation of Anger

author case study

Challenge

Janet Pratt is a retired English Teacher and Counselor.  She’s also a writer, poet, mom, wife, sister, and friend.

She’s also my mother. That is not recommended for working with a client.  We both knew that going in.  Yet we decided to go ahead.  The pandemic had just started and we both wanted to stay connected.  And what better way to make the best of an awful situation. So we had a couple of Zoom lessons and off we went.

Mom is an Adult Child of an Alcoholic, mother of an alcoholic (so she is a lifetime member of Alanon), mother to a daughter who married an alcoholic, and, in her retirement years, an Alcoholic herself.

Her story needed to be told.  She wanted to write what she’d needed to hear throughout her life.

My Role

  • Zoom IT consultant
  • Connector to Talent
  • “Talk2Think” Idea sounding board
  • Publishing Advisor
  • Marketing Advisor
  • Daughter (!)

Janet has been writing since she was 7 years old and has dozens of journals, notebooks, and writings.  She began her memoir more than a decade ago. As an English teacher, she wanted to edit her own work.  She has promised me that, when we do this again, she will work with an editor!

Challenge

Megan Hagel and Jackie Jenson both joined my Creative Mastermind group with their own intentions.  Megan is an illustrator.  Jackie is a writer.  As we moved through the mastermind process,
 giving and getting
feedback while brainstorming new possibilities,
they began to explore the idea of a collaboration.

Jon and the Soggy Leaf is the result of that collaboration.

My Role

  • Group Facilitator
  • Connector to Talent
  • “Talk2Think” Idea sounding board
  • Publishing Advisor
  • Marketing Advisor

What was needed at that point was a way to get their creation into the world.  Together we began to explore publishing options.  We eventually found Dara Beevas in her role at Beavers Pond Press.  Dara walked them through the process and the book was published.

After just a couple of sessions of our creative mastermind, I quickly realized I should have done this years ago. Kelly helped me dust off my creative passions and put them to work in a fulfilling business endeavor.  I just needed a little coaching to put my dreams into motion, ultimately giving my work life a creative new purpose.

Kelly is a master at cutting through the clutter and getting to what matters most to propel your dream or business, offering an inspired practical path to its success.  Coaching is not a pep talk in the 9th inning, it’s a strategy to live, work, create and play each day.  Don’t wait: start living your dream life today. Put Kelly’s experience, creativity and persistence to work for you.

Children’s Book Author, Freelance Writer, Educator , Author of Jon and the Soggy Leaf with illustrator Megan Hagel

Attending the group coaching withKelly was one of the best thing I have ever done in my business. Before meeting with Kelly I was lacking direction to where to take my business next.

My creative mojo was fizzling. Kelly provides inspiration, networking opportunities and challenges me to think about my business in new ways. I'd forgotten where my passions were and how I'd come to the place I was. It was essential to have outside eyes dissect my habits and focus my energy again.

Since first meeting with Kelly, my business became more successful than ever, thanks to a clear vision and new goals. I am excited again and ambitious about where I'm going. I plan to work with Kelly for a very long time and would recommend her to every entrepreneur.

I believe having other supportive entrepreneurs, such as Kelly and the members in my group, is the most important ingredient to keeping the forward momentum I need in my business. Thank you Kelly!

About the book:
Jon and the Soggy Leaf is a book about one small boy’s struggle with change as he frets about his favorite season, fall, soon ending. Filled with colorful artwork and whimsical rhyming couplets, Jon discovers that change is natural, necessary, and can even be fun. With strong sing-song voice, Jon and the Soggy Leaf is a perfect book to read aloud to pre-readers as well as those just beginning to read and write independently.

KAISA TAIPALE: MATH WITH CRAYONS

case study

Challenge

Kaisa contacted me about wanting to convey what she does – she’s a mathematics PhD – to the lay person.  She had an idea to create a coloring book showing what math was really all about “in the wild” – which is patterns. She knew the math.

Solution & Impact

Math? I couldn’t help her with.  Creating a way to show it to the public in a book… that’s where I came in.

Kaisa and I did some one-on-one coaching around what it was she wanted to do.

Then she decided to join a So Do It Salon to have the support of the group as she brought her idea into reality.

My Role

  • Ideator
  • Publishing Advisor
  • Connection to Printers, Publisher
  • “Talk2Think” Idea sounding board
  • Group Facilitator

Together – both one-on-one and in the group setting of the Salon – we worked on Kaisa’s idea. Once she knew exactly what it was.  We began putting together mockups and getting printing bids and  diving into the practicalities of production.

We also hosted Kaisa in the So Do It Gallery during the St. Paul Art Crawl where she sold many copies of MATH WITH CRAYONS!

Cakewalk: The Science of Happy

case study

Challenge

Cj and her granddaughter, Lily, had a dream to create a book together.  It would include photos by Lily and they would write the copy together.  They’d been working on it for a while, but it kept getting relegated to the back burner.  When Cj learned of the So Do It! Salons, she decided this was her “IT” – she wanted to get their book done! So she and Lily joined a salon and together focused  on this legacy project.

At the end of the 13 weeks, they had a manuscript draft. But thought “what now?”

Solution & Impact

That’s where Kelly, the book doula, came into the picture.  Together we worked through the publishing journey, I hooked her up with a fabulous designer and editor Heidi Miller and a wonderful woman owned Printer/publisher, Vervante.com.

Since publishing CAKEWALK Lily and Cj have taken it to the streets!  They’ve been talking to youth and adults alike about creating their own reality using this methold

My Role

  • Process Advisor
  • Publishing Advisor
  • Connector to Talent
  • “Talk2Think” Idea sounding board

We worked together on this project from the Salon through to it’s “coming out party” at a Showcase!  I was there every step of the way, connecting Cj and Lily with talent, sharing my knowledge and experiences of the publishing industry.  And being a sounding board for them as the worked on how to have the greatest impact with CAKEWALK.

The So, do it! Salon was meant to be for me! Not only could I have the support of a group of fabulous, like-minded, women to encourage and cheer this project, and I could also do so for them, but in that group I found our “book doula” Kelly Pratt! She was just that, she helped us give birth to our wonderful book!! We could not have done it without her….
